Reflections on Panti Trip (14-15th Nov '09)
Hello!I'm sure most of us had fun during the M'sia trip haha. Lots of unexpected things happened, like getting sucked by leeches, stung by wasps, stepping on human poo, getting stuck in a thuderstorm during canoeing etc etc. It was a great experience for everyone. Woots. I realised I kinda make the trip sound quite scary lol. But it was quite enjoyable actually la. The view at the peak was pretty nice and the temperature was really great too. Yep so in future if we have any more such trips, I think everyone should go and experience for themselves (: We have learnt quite alot from this camp. Here are some learning points we have consolidated during the debrief this morning: 1. Groundsheets are the most important and versatile items to bring along any hike - Can use as emergency poncho - Can lay it between the ground and the tent to prevent water from sipping through, especially when there are puddles of water on the ground - If it is not raining, we can lay it on the floor for us to sit around or cook meals - One tent must have at least one groundsheet 2. Wear long socks - (impt!!!) Good protection against leeches - Protection against undergrowth, prevents scratches by thorns - Wearing 2 layers of socks can prevent blisters - Bring extra socks as wet socks are really very uncomfortable 3. Bring your own insect repellent - Instead of asking the teachers for insect repellent to get rid of leeches - Pack insect repellent (and other necessary stuff) in accessible compartments of your bag. Necessary stuff include: Poncho, jacket, first aid kit, hat, etc. - Can bring saturated salt solution or medicated oil instead to get rid of leeches 4. Bring windbreaker/jacket/long sleeve shirts - To protect yourself from the cold, especially if it rains or when we're at high altitudes 5. Must know how to pitch the flysheet - The flysheets come in different shapes and sizes - Some flysheets require an extra pole, hence if you don't have the pole, water will still get into the tent if it's raining - Need to learn how to make do with your flysheet even if they are not of the correct shape/size or if you don't have the extra pole 6. Make use of the lifeskill courses that we had - E.g. tying of knots, everybody must know how to tie instead of relying on a few people who know 7. Waterproof everything - Especially when it is rainy almost everyday - Can put everything in ziploc bags, followed by putting all the ziploc bags in another (the thicker type, white in colour that you can buy from beach road) garbage bags and then stuff the entire garbage bag in your bagpack 8. Bring extra stuff - Its better to bring more than bring too little - Not enough socks & underwear as they all got wet - Not enough food - Read itinerary so as to better plan what to bring 9. Choose the right shoes to wear - Some soles came off - Up to your own comfort level - Make sure have shoes with good grip as the ground is very slippery especially after it rains 10. Bags are too small - For a 2-days trip, our bags are okay - But if we are going for a longer trip, we'll need bigger bags - Many people had things tied to their bags because there is no space to put those things inside of their bags - No need to buy bigger bags, can just borrow from other people 11. Caps/hats - Protect eyes against thorny vegetation during hikes - Protect eyes against the rain (like in the case when it rained during our canoeing trip, people without caps/hats couldn't open their eyes to see the path ahead) 12. For added comfort... - Can bring along foam sheet, especially if the campsite is full of rocks 13.
